I had to use another version of l-bfgs-b to make it work with Matlab2019b on linux. I found it at https://github.com/stephenbeckr/L-BFGS-B-C. Simply copied the lbfgsb_wrapper.mexa64  and all .m files from the downloaded L-BFGS-B-C/Matlab to LBFGSB/ directory in the provided code. Most images of the paper, and the code runs on it, however the hardware to actually see the result was not available.
